Het Genootschap weet er alles van: ruim 700 CD&#8217;s blijken al rot bij het overzetten van materiaal naar harde schijven, sommigen al na een half jaar. Een ernstig probleem, zegt ook Jon Wolfert, president van de grootste jinglefirma in de wereld: JAM Creative Productions. In de jaren negentig kreeg hij grote problemen met de 24-sporenbanden. De fabrikant stuurde toen enkele experts om te kijken waarom de banden zo snel in kwaliteit achter uit gingen, vertelde hij ons bij een bezoek aan Dallas. Maar daar is de kous niet mee af, zei hij op de website Jinglemad, waar\u00a0 Tracy Carmen &#8211; van \u00e9en van de grootste verzamelarchieven ter wereld &#8211; klaagde over de teloorgang van materiaal. Wolfert schreef: &#8220;We have tapes dating back to the 1950&#8217;s (PAMS stuff), plus JAM tapes, DATS, CDs, hard drives etc., and there is still NO guarantee that any of it will survive. I am finding that the old tapes are actually less of a problem these days than the DATs (with the exception of tape from the mid-80s, which everyone knows is a disaster area.) When we began using DATs in the early 90s we thought they would solve our analog tape problems, and they did for a while. But now we are finding digital drop-outs and glitches, which are difficult or impossible to repair. The material we&#8217;ve stored on CD\/DVD has been OK so far, but the only real solution is to have multiple back-ups of everything.
