Over de herkomst van het liedje is lang ruzie gemaakt, maar het is wel duidelijk geworden dat Pete Seeger het begin jaren \u201950 heeft geschreven. Op 26 juli 1956 boog het\u00a0Huis van afgevaardigden zich over de kwestie. Met 373 stemmen voor en 9 tegen werd de zaak beslist in het voordeel van Pete Seeger en zeven anderen.
